Tyre labelling and the law.

Since November 2012 all tyres fitted to cars, vans and 4x4s within the EU must be labelled to show their Fuel Efficiency, Web Braking Performance and Exterior Noise emissions. These labels mean that customers (like you!) know more about the tyres you are purchasing, helping you buy tyres that are safe and economical for your vehicle.

How to read a tyre

The sidewall markings mean the following things:

Width, Profile, Radial, Diameter, Load Index and Speed Index.

195 (Width):

The width of the tyre in millimetres

55 (Profile):

Height of the tyre sidewalls as a percentage of the width

R: (Radial):

This means the type of tyre. Other letters you may see are ZR

16: (Diameter):

16 is the diameter of the tyre’s inner rim. It is always expressed in inches. The number varies between 10 and 23 inches for passenger vehicles.

87 (Load Index):

This is an index of the maximum load carrying capacity per tyre at the speed designated by the speed symbol

V (Speed index):

The last letter indicates the maximum speed for the tyre at full load. V corresponds to a maximum speed of 240 km/h (149 MPH). This should generally be higher than your vehicle's maximum speed, however, there are exceptions for winter tyres and exemptions in some countries.

The fuel efficiency of a tyre will be displayed as a rating from A to G. Tyres rated “A” for fuel efficiency are the most efficient (they use the least fuel), and tyres rated “G” are the least efficient (they use the most fuel).

The “wet grip” rating of a tyre tells you how quickly your car will come to a stop, when braking in wet weather. Like the fuel efficiency rating “wet grip” is displayed as a rating from A to G, with A being the highest grip and G being the lowest.

A high wet grip rating means you can brake faster in dangerous situations - helping you avoid collisions and making your car safer to drive.

The external noise rating of a car is displayed is displayed as a small icon indicating the degree to which the tyre meets any current and new EU tyre noise legislation. The 3 sound waves on the diagram show the following;

This tyre meets all current EU legislation and is at least 3dB below the permitted noise level in upcoming legislation (2012-2016).

This tyre’s noise level meets all current and upcoming EU requirements.

This tyre meets all current EU noise requirements
